The morning I finished this painting, I received a text from my mom, who lives in the mountains of Montana. A simple "Are you awake?". For us, that means nobody is dying, but call me ASAP.
She explained how they had found an injured baby fox in the middle of their gravel road, very close to where an adult fox had stopped my mom in her tracks and stared her down the previous day.
The baby was cold, had been bitten by something, and was not doing well. They scooped her up with a towel and got her a cozy box with a heating pad under her to warm her up. I told them to call around to local places to see if there are rehab centers nearby.
They couldn't find any rehab centers, but they were able to get ahold of FWP. FWP let them know that foxes are one of four species that carry zoonotic diseases, and the only option they could offer was to euthanize.
Seeing the horrible shape this poor baby was in, they elected to have FWP come out and do what they needed to do. We believe in nature being nature; however, if they let this little thing go, it would likely suffer a slow and painful death, or be picked up by something bigger than it and suffer a tragic and painful death. They named her Rudy to give her identity and honor her short time here on earth.
So here's to Rudy, may her next adventure be long, full of love, and full of fun.
